Passion Project

Ruby, your project ended up being a very big learning curve. The process around chocolate making was more complex than you had imagined and looking at fair trade opened your eyes to a whole new world. You showed real empathy as you began to understand child labour and how these people were treated. Throughout your research and the trial and error of chocolate making you had to gather data through all of your senses and think flexibly on how to perfect the recipe.
During your whole project you were committed to the task and never gave up even when the chocolate turned into a disaster! Well done Ruby, keep up the great work. All the best for next year.

Reflection

During my passion project I think I have used these habits of mind:
Questioning and Posing Problems, when I was searching for just the right recipe when it didn't turn out I had to think back and think about why and what could have caused the problem.
Persisting, when the chocolate was taking a while to get ready to set in the fridge, and had to keep making the recipes over again to get them right.
Thinking Flexibly when I had to find out a way to keep that recipe but modified it a bit for example so it doesn't taste to sandy: use different milk powder or if it is to runny: use a bit more kermelta.
Managing impulsivity when I had to wait for the chocolate to set and it took quite a while. But I think I have got it now, I also kept trying to get the recipes right.

My new learning 3/11/10

Today I made chocolate 2 batches I think the second batch turned out better the first one because it was a bit sandy. The second batch was nice and glossy. The reason that I made three batches is so I can find out which one is the best, I am going to find that out by asking the children to see which batch I will sell.

Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate

Today at enrich I made milk and dark chocolate. I think the milk chocolate tastes better because it is a lot sweeter. I made a few mistakes like making it a bit lumpy but I think the next time I make it, it will probably be a lot better because I will know to make it go through the sifter properly.

My new learning 21/9/10

Today my new learning was about fair trade chocolate, and how it makes it easier for the people over in Ghana and how before they were suffering because they didn't have enough money to feed their families, and now with fair trade chocolate they get paid to pick the cocoa beans. I think it is a very good for over in Ghana they now have enough money to feed all their families. In Ghana they say that fair trade chocolate has changed their lives. Did you know that around 25 thousand families are involved in cocoa bean picking. 21/9/10 My next part of my investigation is to find out which brands use fair trade chocolate.

This is a diagram that shows what they did at the Seriously Good Chocolate Factory with the chocolate after it got delivered from up north of New Zealand.

We went to the Seriously Good Chocolate Factory to find out the process of making chocolate. In these photos you can see that they melted the chocolate down and poured it in to the molds.

Ruby you managed to find humour even when you were having to really persist to achieve the results you wanted in sculpting your masks. You were dedicated to completing your art and you willingly used your own time to get this done which shows a high level of task commitment and the results you achieved look amazing I will be interested to see how you apply your new learning especially about shading and blending to any future art works. Well done.
